Introduction: With the evolution of techniques and materials used in Odontology, procedures are becoming less aggressive to the patients. But the fear is something that remains in population. Some treatments are only possible to be made using sedation, providing comfort and safety. There are several alternatives for this, since general anesthesia until medication with benzodiazepines. More and more, sedation with nitrous oxide has been proved a useful tool for such procedures, but its use requires a previous knowledge of their biochemistry and equipment to make it possible in a safe and secure way for both the professional and the patient. Methodology: Literature review with current and classics researches. Objective: This paper aims discussing the use of nitrous oxide in dental practice as clinical tool for conscious sedation, as well as the care needed and its indications and contraindications. Conclusion: The conscious sedation is an effective aciety control technic. It's also safe, and can even be used in pacientes with special needs. It`s has no absolut contraindications and provides confort and safety for the patient and for the professional.
