Purpose:The objective of this research was to delineate a profile of the prevalence and etiology of the maxillary trauma in a public hospital in the city of Recife. Materials and methods:Were collected demographic and clinical data through the analysis of medical records from May 2008 until May 2011, identifying 1046 patients with maxillary trauma. The etiologic factors were set to work: Traffic Accidents, Running over; Fire guns; Physical aggression/ Melee weapon; Accidental Injury; Work Accidents, and Not identified. Regarding to statistical analysis techniques, were used descriptive and inferential ones, and the significance level used in the tests was 5.0%, with a confidence interval of 95.0%. Results:From the sample of 24,916 patients with some type of craniofacial trauma, 1,046 (4.2%) were registered with maxillary trauma. The social-demographic profile shows prevalence of male patients (73.9%), between 0-20 years (44.3% ), from Recife (48.4%), and as the main etiologic factor were the Accidental trauma (36.9%).Conclusions: Based on the collected data, the authors conclude that this kind of research can motivate health workers, majorly, the ones of the Unique Health Sistem - SUS, to improve the compulsory notification system, as supporting the implementation of effective public policies to prevent injuries from external causes in susceptible groups.
