RIOS, Ana Carla Ferreira Carneiro et al. USE OF PROSTHESIS TYPE OVERLAY AS FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT FEATURE IN INDIVIDUALS WITH IMPAIRED VERTICAL DIMENSION OF OCCLUSION. Odontol. Clín.-Cient. (Online) [online]. 2016, vol.15, n.2, pp. 135-140. ISSN 1677-3888.

Vertical Dimension of Occlusion (DVO) is the distance established between the jaws, measured between two points defined in the facial midline, one in the midface and another in the lower third of the face, determining a straight line when upper teeth and below are in contact on high oral closure. Changes in DVO result of occlusal imbalance in the subsequent partial tooth loss and attrition associated with oral parafunctions are mentioned as relevant factors. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of using removable partial denture (PRP) Interim overlay type in individuals with DVO change, such as functional assessment feature in the adaptation phase of the stomatognathic system, prior to final aesthetic and functional rehabilitation. It took place the last review of the literature 10 years in SCIELO databases, Pub Med and Bireme, and presented a case report of a patient with loss of posterior dental support and attrition of anterior teeth. It was found that the use of PRP provisional overlay type in oral rehabilitation of patients with reduced therapeutic DVO constitutes an aid in restoration of altered functions, aiming at the gradual adaptation of the patient a new compatible maxillomandibular relationship both from a functional point of view and aesthetic.
