CAMPOS, Lais Costa de Siqueira et al. Interference of periodontal disease in speech: case report. IJD, Int. j. dent. [online]. 2010, vol.9, n.1, pp. 52-56. ISSN 1806-146X.

Periodontal disease consists on soft tissue swelling. Can happen an inflammation of the gingival border, which is the gingivitis or can occur absorption of the alveolar bone, which is the periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss. These changes from periodontal diseases lead to significant changes on the functional pattern of the stomatognathic system, damaging some functions, such as: function of speech disorders. This clinical case aims identify changes resulting from periodontal diseases in the stomatognathic system and how these changes affect the speech. Patient H.S.P. with 24 years old was evaluated at the clinic school of UFPE. The complaint was linked to the articulation of speech and difficulty opening the mouth to articulate. Has a history of periodontal disease, presenting gingivitis and periodontitis. Was referred to the speech clinic by a specialist in periodontics. Changes were found in the stomatognathic system from periodontal disease installed, such as: mobility of teeth, limitation in range of motion and difficulty in mandibular lateralization. As noted some changes in speech concomitantly, such as: the frontal lisp unsystematic and the aslisp evidenced by the difficulty to open the mouth, presenting a distortion in the /S/ and /Z/ phonemes, from the limitation of mandibular movement. Given this case can conclude that in fact that the periodontal diseases cause damages to the stomatognathic system and, these, cause changes that affect directly the articulation of speech. The changes found reflect the difficulty to better articulate some phonemes, being necessary, then, attention to speech promoting the reintegration of the stomatognathic system together with a multidisciplinary team to better care for the case. Being possible the presentation of a good clinical outcome and better prognosis, in a shorter period of time.
