FERNANDES, Camila Borges et al. Prevalence of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia on different population groups. IJD, Int. j. dent. [online]. 2010, vol.9, n.4, pp. 187-192. ISSN 1806-146X.

The identification of periodontal pathogens is an important tool for the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. The present cross-sectional study aimed to verify the prevalence of three periodontal pathogens, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, on different groups, with and without teeth. This survey included 40 newborns (2.20 ± 1.30 months), 40 children (9.33 ± 1.99 years of age), 30 dentate adults/elderly subjects (61.7 ± 7.05 years of age) and 30 edentulous adults/elderly subjects (65.8 ± 6.69 years of age). Microbial extra-sulcus samples (cheek mucosa and dorsum of the tongue) were obtained from all subjects. In addition, microbial subgingival samples (sulci or periodontal pockets) were collected from dentate subjects. All samples were analyzed using bacterial DNA-specific polymerase chain reaction. Bacterial frequencies were statistically analyzed using Chi-square tests. We observed that the newborns allocated A. actinomycetemcomitans alone (2.56%). On children with 6-13 years old population we detected both A. actinomycetemcomitans (10.00%) as well as Prevotella intermedia (92.50%). P. gingivalis was present on adults/elderly subjects (46.67%) on dentate group and 3.33% on the matched edentulous group. We concluded that the study of different population groups allowed to deduce that periodontal microbiota have been present irrespective of the presence of risk factors for periodontal disease such as: age, presence and number of teeth on mouth.
