Abstract
CARNEIRO, Gleicy Gabriela Vitória Spínola et al. Cervicofacial actinomycosis: a case report. Rev. cir. traumatol. buco-maxilo-fac. [online]. 2010, vol.10, n.1, pp. 21-26. ISSN 1808-5210.
Actynomycosis is an uncommon infection caused by oral bacteria of the genus Actinomyces. Despite its typical clinical signs, it can resemble or masquerade as other infectious conditions, making diagnosis more difficult and adversely affecting a successful outcome of treatment. A 42-year-old female presented with a palpable increased volume of soft tissue in her right hemiface extending from the temporal to the cervical region. The clinical and laboratory findings were insufficient for a definitive diagnosis. The purpose of the present article is to report a case of cervicofacial actinomycosis, describing and discussing its methods of diagnosis, clinical course and treatment. This clinical case of cervicofacial actinomycosis reported here emphasizes the importance of this condition and the need for an early diagnosis with a view to improving the quality of life of patients affected.
