The aim of the present study was to conduct a survey of injuries of the maxillofacial complex following biopsies performed on patients of the Brazilian Public Healthcare System treated at the Trauma and Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the Dentistry Course of the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil). The results underscore the importance of the early diagnosis of benign and malignant tumors, the divulgation of the university in question as a reference center for the diagnosis and treatment of such lesions, the incentive toward a better interface between Basic Public Health Units and the university and clinical/surgical practice for medical students, demonstrating the impossibility of dissociating theory and practice.
