BARBOSA, Daniel Tiago; CIELO, Vinícius Flores; DUARTE, Marta  e  ILHA, Jocemar. Paracetamol in pain control in simple extractions. Rev. cir. traumatol. buco-maxilo-fac. [online]. 2012, vol.12, n.4, pp. 99-110. ISSN 1808-5210.

Objective: To verify the effectiveness of paracetamol, whether or not associated with lornoxicam, in the control of inflammatory processes and pain in simple extractions. Methods: The sample comprised four patients with ages ranging from 18 to 45 years requiring bilateral tooth extractions. The surgeries were considered individually (n = 4 surgeries per group), Group 0 (placebo and paracetamol) and Group 1 (lornoxicam and paracetamol). At each surgery the participants answered a 100-mm Pain Analog Scale (VAS) taken up to 48 hours after surgery. Blood samples were collected at three time points: before and immediately following surgery and 72 hours later. The samples were submitted to laboratory analysis to measure the levels of interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein (CRP) at the three times. Results: There were no significant differences (p<0.05) between the groups in the analysis of pain scale. The levels of Interleukin-6 were higher after the tooth extractions and returned to normal after 72 hours, but there were no significant differences between the groups. For their part the CRP levels rose after surgery and remained high at 72 hours The CRP levels were higher for Group 0 at time 3, as compared to Group 1. Conclusion: Paracetamol has proved effective in controlling postoperative pain, the use of lornoxicam being optional in simple tooth extractions.
