Objective: Classify the subjects according to standard facial and dental relations, associating them with the indication of orthognathic surgery as a treatment option.Methods: This was a cross-sectional analytical study in which two calibrated examiners evaluated orthodontic records as the standard facial and dental relations indication of surgical orthodontic treatment.Exclusion criteria were incomplete documentation, the pertaining to patients who had undergone orthodontic treatment or previous facial surgeries, and those presented in the phase of deciduous and mixed dentition. Results : The sample comprised 841 documentation. Gender did not show any influence over other study variables. The standard I was the most prevalent, followed by II, III, Face Long and Short. Surgery was indicated in 228 cases, and standards III, Face Long and Short of the higher rates. The higher prevalence of dental relation was Class I. There was strong trend of dental relations follow the facial pattern, especially among individuals Standard II and class II and Pattern III and class III. Conclusion: The Pattern I was the most prevalent. There was a strong tendency of dental relations following the facial pattern. About one third of individuals were referred for orthodontic-surgical treatment.
