This is a bibliographical study that attempts to systematize the participation of the dental surgeon in the family health team, observing how interdisciplinarity occurs, pointing out its characteristics, eases and difficulties. The objective was to search the domestic literature for elements that shape the professional practices of the dental surgeon in the multidisciplinary teams of the Family Health Program. The method consisted of searching for studies and government documents on the theme published between 2002 and 2007, using the role of the dental surgeon as reference. After a critical and analytical read of the studies and documents, it became clear that oral health is still incipient in the Family Health Program. Dental surgeons carry out an autonomous, curative practice and do not interact with the other members of the health team and their knowledge.
