Objective This study aimed to analyze the job market for newly graduated dentistry students form the Federal University of Ceará, School of Pharmacy, Dentistry and Nursing. Methods The sociodemographic profile of dentists of the class of 2007 was investigated to determine their professional status, work shift, type of work and satisfaction with the work market. This is a descriptive and exploratory study with a quantitative approach. Data were collected from April to June 2009. A questionnaire was administered to the participants who met the researcher during the III International Dentistry Congress of Ceará, which took place in Fortaleza from May 13 to 17, 2009. The other students received the questionnaire by mail. Results Of the 67 professionals who graduated in 2007 from Federal University of Ceará and registered their practice at the Regional Council of Dentistry, Section Ceará, 41 answered the questionnaire (61.19%). Of these, 78% were females. The ages ranged from 22 to 28 years. Most professionals (60.9%) had a monthly income of 3 to 5 minimum wages. The working week of 75.7% of the sample ranged from 31 to 40 hours and 46.5% were in the public sector. Most professionals (95.0%) found a job in the first months, 78.0% perceived the market as good and normal and 82.9% were satisfied with the profession. Conclusion The results of this study indicate that the dentistry market of Ceará is not yet saturated
