Entretanto, para a prática comparativa deve-se levar em consideração os mesmos métodos utilizados nas tomadas radiográficas em vida, evitando distorções e erros. O presente trabalho é um artigo de revisão histórica, no qual são citados diversos autores que utilizam o seio frontal como meio para identificação humana.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Radiology is a specialty that is extremely utilized in Forensic dentistry (or Forensic Odontology), since it allows comparative analysis of ante- and post-mortem radiographs of the oral and maxillofacial complex. Human identification by the frontal sinus has become increasingly frequent due to the uniqueness of the frontal sinus in humans, what makes it a valuable instrument in the individualization. However, it is necessary for the comparative analysis to consider the same methods used in the radiographs in life, this way it is possible to avoid distortions and errors. This paper is a historical review article which names several authors who use the frontal sinus as means for human identification.]]></p></abstract>

<body><![CDATA[<p><font size="3" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B> Introdu&ccedil;&atilde;o</B></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Identidade &eacute; o conjunto de caracteres f&iacute;sicos, funcionais e ps&iacute;quicos, natos ou adquiridos, por&eacute;m permanentes, que torna uma pessoa diferente das demais e id&ecirc;ntica a si mesma<sup>31</sup>. A identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana &eacute; de suma import&acirc;ncia em Odontologia forense, tanto por raz&otilde;es legais como humanit&aacute;rias, sendo muito frequentemente iniciada antes mesmo de se determinar a causa da morte. Assim, ap&oacute;s a morte as pessoas podem ter preservados seu direitos, bem como ter cobrados os seus deveres, quer civis, quer penais<sup>8</sup>. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">A Odontologia legal participa dos processos de identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o post-mortem de diversas formas: estimativa de sexo e idade, nas determina&ccedil;&otilde;es de grupos &eacute;tnicos, cor da pele e outras caracteristicas, no diagn&oacute;stico de l&iacute;quidos ou manchas presentes na cavidade oral, na determina&ccedil;&atilde;o da causa e do tempo de morte. Para a identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o, s&atilde;o utilizadas t&eacute;cnicas e metodologias de rotina que incluem reconhecimento visual da vestimenta, objetos pessoais, dactiloscopia, an&aacute;lise de DNA, dentre outras. Entretanto, quando ocorrem acidentes em massa, vit&iacute;mas de inc&ecirc;ndio, desastres a&eacute;reos em que os corpos humanos encontram-se em diversos est&aacute;gios, como carbonizados, dilacerados, macerados, em est&aacute;gios de putrefa&ccedil;&atilde;o ou mesmo esqueletizados, a identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o passa a ser feita por compara&ccedil;&atilde;o de imagens radiogr&aacute;ficas ante-mortem e post-mortem, principalmente por meio da an&aacute;lise morfol&oacute;gica da denti&ccedil;&atilde;o, uma vez que s&atilde;o menos sucept&iacute;veis a altera&ccedil;&otilde;es nutricionais, hormonais, patol&oacute;gicas e a altas temperaturas, e ao estado dos seios da face por normalmente permanecerem intactos. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">A an&aacute;lise comparativa de radiografias ante e post-mortem, principalmente do seio frontal, por apresentar in&uacute;meras particularidades anat&ocirc;micas, tem sido um excelente m&eacute;todo utilizado na identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o forense, devido ao fato de o seio frontal ser considerado uma estrutura imut&aacute;vel, embora alguns processos patol&oacute;gicos possam alter&aacute;-lo, e tamb&eacute;m por apresentar um padr&atilde;o &uacute;nico em cada indiv&iacute;duo, mesmo em g&ecirc;meos monozig&oacute;ticos<sup>27</sup>. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">A atua&ccedil;&atilde;o do cirurgi&atilde;o-dentista no &acirc;mbito forense &eacute; assegurada pela legisla&ccedil;&atilde;o federal competente, a Lei n&ordm; 5081, de 24 de agosto de 1966, que regulamenta o exerc&iacute;cio da Odontologia no Brasil. O campo de atua&ccedil;&atilde;o dos odontolegistas n&atilde;o se restringe apenas ao exame dos vest&iacute;gios dent&aacute;rios, mas extende-se a v&aacute;rias &aacute;reas respaldadas por legisla&ccedil;&atilde;o federal<sup>5</sup>. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">A radiografia tem sido utilizada desde 1990 e &eacute; considerada um forte instrumento de aux&iacute;lio na fase de identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o de uma pessoa. A an&aacute;lise comparativa entre as radiografias ante-mortem e post-mortem &eacute; de extrema valia, tornando-se uma ferramenta fundamental de identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o por antrop&oacute;logos e odontolegistas. Por&eacute;m, um grande problema na utiliza&ccedil;&atilde;o de radiografias &eacute; a qualidade destas para uma correta aquisi&ccedil;&atilde;o de imagens radiogr&aacute;ficas, e o protocolo deve ser composto por fatores energ&eacute;ticos, de processamento e pelo fator geom&eacute;trico.O fator energ&eacute;tico &eacute; composto pela miliamperagem, que &eacute; a express&atilde;o quantitativa do fluxo eletr&ocirc;nico nos aparelhos de raio X odontol&oacute;gicos. Esta costuma ser fixa, com uma amplitude que varia de 7 a 10 mA. A miliamperagem &eacute; o principal fator energ&eacute;tico respons&aacute;vel pela densidade radiogr&aacute;fica<sup>13</sup>. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">O tempo de exposi&ccedil;&atilde;o &eacute; um elemento vari&aacute;vel controlado pelos marcadores de tempo e s&atilde;o respons&aacute;veis pela quantidade de raios X. A quilovoltagem determina a qualidade dos raios X, ou seja, o contraste. A quilovoltagem costuma ser fixa<sup>13</sup>. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">O fator processamento das radiografias deve ser executado em ambiente livre de luz (artificial ou natural) e com uma temperatura nem muito alta e nem muito fria. Al&eacute;m disto, as solu&ccedil;&otilde;es processadoras devem ser armazenadas em tanques providos de tampas, para evitar a oxida&ccedil;&atilde;o e confeccionadas por materiais que n&atilde;o alterem sua composi&ccedil;&atilde;o<sup>13</sup>. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">O fator geom&eacute;trico &eacute; dependente da posi&ccedil;&atilde;o da fonte emissora de radia&ccedil;&atilde;o X, do objeto e da superf&iacute;cie de registro, ou seja, o filme. Deve ser o mesmo, porque os raios X s&atilde;o similares &agrave; luz, e por caminharem em linha reta est&atilde;o sujeitos aos princ&iacute;pios de forma&ccedil;&atilde;o de imagem que regem a &oacute;ptica geom&eacute;trica<sup>13</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> Portanto, a participa&ccedil;&atilde;o da Odontologia legal nos processos de identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana &eacute; de suma import&acirc;ncia, por propiciar uma gama de informa&ccedil;&otilde;es para possibilitar uma correta identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o. </font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">O presente trabalho teve por objetivo realizar uma revis&atilde;o de literatura sobre as v&aacute;rias metodologias existentes para a identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana atrav&eacute;s do seio frontal, que se utilizam de exames imaginol&oacute;gicos, visando reafirmar a import&acirc;ncia do seio frontal para a Odontologia forense.</font><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> </font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font size="3" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><B> Revis&atilde;o de Literatura</B></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Anatomicamente, o seio frontal pode ser definido como uma cavidade pneum&aacute;tica, recoberta por mucosa, situada entre a l&acirc;mina interna e externa do osso frontal<sup>28</sup>. Em rela&ccedil;&atilde;o &agrave; forma, o seio frontal pode ser classificado como bilateral, assim&eacute;trico ou ter septos que separam o lado direito do esquerdo. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">A utiliza&ccedil;&atilde;o das imagens radiogr&aacute;ficas na identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana iniciou sua trajet&oacute;ria em 1896, para demonstrar a presen&ccedil;a de proj&eacute;teis de chumbo na cabe&ccedil;a de uma v&iacute;tima<sup>12</sup>. Em 1895, Zuckerkandl<sup>34</sup> foi quem primeiramente observou a individualidade do seio frontal, chamando a aten&ccedil;&atilde;o para sua assimetria. Em 1921, Schuller<sup>27</sup> prop&ocirc;s pela primeira vez a identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana por meio do seio frontal utilizando- se de imagens radiogr&aacute;ficas, devido &agrave; proposi&ccedil;&atilde;o de individualidade, afirmando que at&eacute; os seios frontais dos g&ecirc;meos monozig&oacute;ticos n&atilde;o possuem a mesma conforma&ccedil;&atilde;o, e tamb&eacute;m concluiu que a forma do seio frontal &eacute; determinada por tr&ecirc;s fatores: end&oacute;crino, mec&acirc;nico e fatores inerentes das membranas. A primeira identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana foi descrita em 1927 por Culbert e Law<sup>11</sup>, sendo aceita pela justi&ccedil;a norte-americana. Asherson<sup>2</sup>, em 1965, tamb&eacute;m estudou g&ecirc;meos monozig&oacute;ticos e determinou que havia diferen&ccedil;as nos padr&otilde;es dos seios frontais. Em seu estudo, estabeleceu uma identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o positiva quanto &agrave; an&aacute;lise comparativa de radiografias ante e post-mortem. Em 1972, Koertvelyessy<sup>18</sup> afirmou que as altera&ccedil;&otilde;es clim&aacute;ticas interferem na conforma&ccedil;&atilde;o do seio frontal. O estudo concluiu que os indiv&iacute;duos que habitam lugares frios possuem uma &aacute;rea sinusal menor do que aqueles que habitam localidades quentes. Segundo Buckland-Wright<sup>6</sup>, muitas mudan&ccedil;as da morfologia por vezes est&atilde;o ligadas a fatores inflamat&oacute;rios, como: sinusite, tumor, tuberculose e s&iacute;filis. O seio frontal &eacute; caracterizado por ser &uacute;nico e individual, sua forma permanece praticamente inalterada durante toda a vida adulta do indiv&iacute;duo, embora alguns fatores ambientais tenham a capacidade de modificar a sua estrutura, tais como: trauma, patologias, tumores, infec&ccedil;&otilde;es, mucoceles, cirurgias, pr&aacute;ticas esportivas (aumentam a ventila&ccedil;&atilde;o durante os exerc&iacute;cios f&iacute;sicos em atletas, devido ao aumento da press&atilde;o interna das cavidades, promovendo hiperpneumatiza&ccedil;&atilde;o dos seios, que pode alterar a sua forma), e com o aumento da idade pode ocorrer o aumento da cavidade por reabsor&ccedil;&atilde;o das paredes do seio, por&eacute;m todos de incid&ecirc;ncia rara<sup>26</sup>. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Os seios frontais n&atilde;o est&atilde;o presentes ao nascimento, estes come&ccedil;am o seu desenvolvimento a partir do terceiro ano de vida<sup>20</sup>. Por&eacute;m, de acordo com Bensimon e Eloit<sup>4</sup>, n&atilde;o podem ser detectados radiograficamente at&eacute; a idade de quatro a seis anos. O crescimento dos seios frontais &eacute; mais r&aacute;pido na puberdade, completando-se em torno de 20 anos de idade, quando ent&atilde;o cessa seu crescimento, o que &eacute; consenso entre todos os autores pesquisados<sup>8</sup>. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Devido ao fato de o cr&acirc;nio possuir numerosos tra&ccedil;os que o individualizam e que estes s&atilde;o vis&iacute;veis por meio da an&aacute;lise de radiografias, o seio frontal &eacute; muito utilizado na pr&aacute;tica da identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o forense. Muitos autores publicaram casos em que estabeleceram uma identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana positiva utilizando imagens radiogr&aacute;ficas do seio frontal<sup>1,3,14,16,21-21-23,25,30</sup>. Entretanto, Reichs<sup>25,26</sup> realizou uma identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o positiva por meio da mensura&ccedil;&atilde;o de tra&ccedil;os, superposi&ccedil;&atilde;o e compara&ccedil;&atilde;o morfol&oacute;gica de imagens tomogr&aacute;ficas ante e post-mortem.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> Yoshino et al.<sup>33</sup>, em 1987, demonstraram a grande variabilidade do seio frontal por meio da an&aacute;lise do perfil da margem superior, pela medi&ccedil;&atilde;o da &aacute;rea sinusal, averigua&ccedil;&atilde;o da presen&ccedil;a ou pela aus&ecirc;ncia de c&eacute;lulas supraorbitais e finalmente pela presen&ccedil;a ou aus&ecirc;ncia de septo. Trinta e cinco pacientes japoneses, adultos, participaram da pesquisa. Foram radiografados em norma &acirc;ntero-posterior, posicionados com o plano de Frankfurt perpendicular &agrave; superf&iacute;cie do filme, as radiografias foram padronizadas (60 Kvp, 3 mA e 3 minutos de exposi&ccedil;&atilde;o). Essas radiografias foram utilizadas para medir a &aacute;rea de superf&iacute;cie do seio, assimetria bilateral e contorno do seio frontal. A &aacute;rea foi determinada pela soma da &aacute;rea do lado direito com a do lado esquerdo, e o &iacute;ndice de assimetria foi calculado dividindo-se a menor &aacute;rea do seio frontal encontrado pela maior &aacute;rea encontrada. Os autores propuseram uma classifica&ccedil;&atilde;o do seio tomando como base os fatores que determinam a variabilidade da cavidade, citados anteriormente. Depois de realizada esta classifica&ccedil;&atilde;o da estrutura, os seios de cada indiv&iacute;duo foram codificados, formando uma sequ&ecirc;ncia num&eacute;rica, o que determinava a sua morfologia como um todo. A diferen&ccedil;a da &aacute;rea entre o sexo feminino e masculino n&atilde;o obteve signific&acirc;ncia, o coeficiente de varia&ccedil;&atilde;o para a &aacute;rea foi muito diferente entre o examinado, o que nos diz &agrave; variabilidade que ocorre entre uma pessoa e outra. Homens e mulheres tamb&eacute;m n&atilde;o apresentaram diferen&ccedil;a significativa entre a presen&ccedil;a e aus&ecirc;ncia de septos e c&eacute;lulas supraorbitais e tamb&eacute;m n&atilde;o apresentaram diferen&ccedil;as morfol&oacute;gicas conflitando com o que est&aacute; na literatura, e mostrando que o seio frontal n&atilde;o &eacute; um bom m&eacute;todo para a determina&ccedil;&atilde;o do sexo. O m&eacute;todo conseguiu provar que a chance de uma pessoa ter o mesmo perfil de seio frontal que a outra &eacute; muito remota. Neste estudo todos os casos analisados apresentaram assimetria bilateral concordando com a literatura. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Tamb&eacute;m em 1987, Harris<sup>15</sup> relatou que o uso de radiografias extraorais para an&aacute;lise dos seios frontais pode ser de extrema valia para a identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana; por&eacute;m ressaltou que se o m&eacute;todo de compara&ccedil;&atilde;o entre radiografias ante-mortem e post-mortem for utilizado, deve-se tomar o cuidado de posicionar corretamente o cr&acirc;nio, com mesma angula&ccedil;&atilde;o e densidade que foi empregado quando em vivo.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> Kullman et al.<sup>19</sup> realizaram a &uacute;nica pesquisa emp&iacute;rica utilizando a correspond&ecirc;ncia de padr&atilde;o e obtiveram quase 100% de efetividade. Quatrehomme et al.<sup>24</sup>, em 1996, sugeriram um procedimento alternativo de compara&ccedil;&atilde;o envolvendo a performance de uma radiografia post-mortem semelhante &agrave; radiografia dispon&iacute;vel em vida, levando em considera&ccedil;&atilde;o o tamanho, a exposi&ccedil;&atilde;o e o &acirc;ngulo. Embora esses procedimentos sejam certamente justific&aacute;veis, a compara&ccedil;&atilde;o das radiografias apenas por meio da correspond&ecirc;ncia morfol&oacute;gica das caracter&iacute;sticas do seio frontal tamb&eacute;m foi comprovada e, &agrave;s vezes, pode ser superior.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> Kirk et al.<sup>17</sup> ,confirmaram a import&acirc;ncia do seio frontal para a Odontologia forense, realizaram um trabalho com an&aacute;lise de radiografias ante-mortem e post-mortem em 39 casos; desses casos, 3 foram rejeitados por falta de radiografias ante-mortem e 1 n&atilde;o possu&iacute;a as cavidades do seio frontal. Com isso, os 35 casos analisados, foram identificados, comprovando que a sobreposi&ccedil;&atilde;o de imagens ante-mortem e post-mortem, com an&aacute;lise de seio frontal, &eacute; uma importante ferramenta na identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o de v&iacute;timas. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Em 2003, Taniguchi et al.<sup>29</sup> realizaram um estudo com 209 casos de aut&oacute;psia, dos quais apenas 24 casos possu&iacute;am radiografias ante-mortem e 163 casos cl&iacute;nicos. Foram analisadas as cavidades nasais e tamb&eacute;m o seio frontal. A an&aacute;lise baseou-se em classificar as cavidades nasais (reta, desvio para a esquerda, desvio para a direita, sigmoide, sigmoide reverso e tipos raros), e tamb&eacute;m os seios frontais (sim&eacute;trico, assim&eacute;trico com domin&acirc;ncia para a esquerda e assim&eacute;trico com domin&acirc;ncia para a direita). Posteriormente foram comparadas as radiografias antes e ap&oacute;s o &oacute;bito. Conclu&iacute;ram que os seios frontais masculinos possuem maior n&uacute;mero de l&oacute;bulos quando comparados com v&iacute;timas do g&ecirc;nero feminino, a combina&ccedil;&atilde;o de an&aacute;lise de seio frontal e cavidade nasal resultou em identifica&ccedil;&otilde;es positivas nos casos avaliados. Os autores ressaltaram a import&acirc;ncia da radiografia na Odontologia, mostrando que esta &eacute; uma documenta&ccedil;&atilde;o necess&aacute;ria nos consult&oacute;rios odontol&oacute;gicos. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Christensen<sup>9</sup> realizou uma revis&atilde;o de literatura em 2004 e chamou a aten&ccedil;&atilde;o para a cria&ccedil;&atilde;o de metodologias mais objetivas, j&aacute; que em muitos estudos utilizou-se a determina&ccedil;&atilde;o do contorno do seio frontal de maneira emp&iacute;rica, o que pode ocasionar erros e, contudo, gerar uma falsa identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o. O autor ressalta a import&acirc;ncia de se criar um m&eacute;todo mais objetivo, com fundamentos est&aacute;ticos e menos chances de insucessos. No mesmo ano, Christensen<sup>10</sup> publicou um estudo no qual demonstrava essa metodologia mais concreta. Criou o m&eacute;todo de compara&ccedil;&atilde;o EFA da radiografia do seio frontal que pode ser aplicado de forma objetiva e quantitativa nos casos de identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o pessoal. Foram utilizadas 808 radiografias p&oacute;stero-anteriores em que o seio frontal ficou posicionado pr&oacute;ximo ao filme, com o intuito de afastar distor&ccedil;&otilde;es m&iacute;nimas e tamb&eacute;m para adquirir o m&aacute;ximo de clareza. O cr&acirc;nio foi posicionado com a face para baixo com o eixo sagital perpendicular ao filme do raio X. Depois, o cr&acirc;nio foi posicionado delimitando uma linha reta imagin&aacute;ria entre o n&aacute;sio e o ponto mais superior do meato ac&uacute;stico externo, sendo esta linha perpendicular ao filme. As linhas de contorno do seio foram obtidas com a inser&ccedil;&atilde;o da radiografia em um negatosc&oacute;pio e tra&ccedil;ando o contorno do seio em um papel. Os limites mais externos foram tra&ccedil;ados, os limites laterais e superiores foram mais f&aacute;cies do que o inferior, onde se tem um pouco mais de dificuldade para tra&ccedil;&aacute;-lo. Devido a essa dificuldade, este estudo adotou o m&eacute;todo de Libersa e Faber<sup>20</sup>, em que a linha inferior do contorno foi tra&ccedil;ada como sendo tangente &agrave; linha superior da &oacute;rbita. Os contornos foram escaneados e posteriormente editados para imagens em preto e branco. Posteriormente, um software foi utilizado para que as imagens fossem apresentadas no m&eacute;todo cartesiano. Este estudo utilizou o EFA (Elliptic Fourier Analysis), em que uma equa&ccedil;&atilde;o geom&eacute;trica &eacute; montada com base no m&eacute;todo cartesiano, o qual determina com maior precis&atilde;o poss&iacute;vel os pontos, que poder&atilde;o ser utilizados para redesenhar o contorno. Depois foi medida a dist&acirc;ncia Euclidean, que nada mais &eacute; do que a dist&acirc;ncia entre pares de contornos. Este estudo concluiu que cada indiv&iacute;duo possui um contorno distinto. A dist&acirc;ncia Euclidean &eacute; maior entre os indiv&iacute;duos quando comparada com as r&eacute;plicas de um mesmo individuo. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Al&eacute;m disso, o m&eacute;todo foi aprovado e se demonstrou confi&aacute;vel para comparar o contorno do seio frontal a fim de aceitar ou rejeitar uma hip&oacute;tese de identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o. O autor tamb&eacute;m sugere que o m&eacute;todo proposto pode ser utilizado em combina&ccedil;&atilde;o a outros m&eacute;todos que j&aacute; foram utilizados na literatura ou que ainda ser&atilde;o criados. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Em 2005, Cameriere<sup>7</sup> refor&ccedil;ou a fidedignidade do m&eacute;todo de identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o desenvolvido por Yoshino<sup>33</sup>. Foram analisadas 98 radiografias de cr&acirc;nios, estas foram digitalizadas e trabalhadas em photoshop. Como preconizado por Yoshino<sup>33</sup>, essas radiografias foram usadas para avaliar as &aacute;reas do seio frontal, tanto do lado direito quanto do lado esquerdo, assimetria bilateral, &aacute;rea superior, contorno da borda superior dos seios, septo parcial, c&eacute;lulas supraorbitais e as &oacute;rbitas. Com o intuito de tentar minimizar erros devido a posicionamento errado e/ou qualidade de radiografia (contraste, densidade), foi feita uma estimativa, para utilizar a frequ&ecirc;ncia correta a essa regi&atilde;o. Todas as altera&ccedil;&otilde;es citadas foram analisadas e classificadas de acordo com testes estat&iacute;sticos. Concluiu-se que o m&eacute;todo preconizado por Yoshino<sup>33</sup> &eacute; um instrumento rico para a identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana e que o seio frontal pode ser a solu&ccedil;&atilde;o na hora da identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o individual, j&aacute; que por este m&eacute;todo fica claro a individualidade desta estrutura, provando matematicamente que a probabilidade de uma pessoa possuir o seio frontal id&ecirc;ntico a outro &eacute; remota. Por&eacute;m, deve-se tomar cuidado quanto ao posicionamento do cr&acirc;nio durante a tomada radiogr&aacute;fica. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Pelo fato de o seio frontal estar ausente em apenas 4% da popula&ccedil;&atilde;o e de possuir varia&ccedil;&otilde;es na forma, &aacute;rea e simetria, este constitui o par&acirc;metro de grande import&acirc;ncia, tanto para determina&ccedil;&atilde;o do dimorfismo sexual quanto para a identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana. Para tanto, torna-se imprescind&iacute;vel a obten&ccedil;&atilde;o de radiografias p&oacute;stero-anteriores de cr&acirc;nio com o uso correto da t&eacute;cnica e de acordo com os padr&otilde;es adequados de processamento<sup>16,21,30,32</sup>.</font><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> </font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font size="3" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>Conclus&atilde;o</b> </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">A an&aacute;lise radiogr&aacute;fica do seio frontal proporciona um elevado grau de veracidade na identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana, pois permite correlacionar as diferentes estruturas &oacute;sseas que a comp&otilde;em nas radiografias ante e post mortem. </font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Na literatura pesquisada h&aacute; in&uacute;meras metodologias empregadas, a fim de estabelecer uma identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o humana efetiva atrav&eacute;s do seio frontal, por meio das quais s&atilde;o realizadas compara&ccedil;&otilde;es e sobreposi&ccedil;&otilde;es de diferentes tomadas radiogr&aacute;ficas, m&eacute;todos objetivos, estat&iacute;sticos e mensura&ccedil;&otilde;es de tra&ccedil;os e contornos. </font></p>     ]]></body>
