(Pitangueira), da casca do caule da Persea americana Miil. (Abacateiro), e das cascas dos frutos do Citrus limon L. (Limoeiro) e Sicana odorífera L. (Crua) frente a Lactobacillus casei (ATCC 7469). A atividade anttbacterrana foi determinada a partir da Concentração Inibitóría Mínima (CIM) de crescimento bacteriano. Os extratos foram testados por meio do método de difusão em ágar sangue, pela técnica dos poços. Não houve formação de halos de inibição de crescimento do microrganismo avaliado para o extrato do Citrus limon L. e Sicana odorífera L.. Porém, observou-se atividade antibacteriana para Eugenia uniflora L., sendo verificada CIM de 6,25mg/mL. O extrato da Persea americana L. apresentou CIM de 25mg/mL. Diante dos resultados expostos, pode-se concluir que, dentre os produtos naturais avaliados, apenas a Eugenia uniflora L e Persea americana L apresentaram atividade antibacteriana sobre o Lactobacillus casei.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[It was aimed to evaluate, in vitro, the antibacterial activity of hydroalcoholics extracts obtained from the leaves of Eugenia uniflora L. (Pitangueira), the peel of the stem of Persea Americana Mill. (Abacateiro), and the peel of the fruits of Citrus limon L. (Limoeiro) and Sicana odorífera L. (Cruá) against Lactobacillus casei (ATCC 7469). The antibacterial action was determined by the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of bacterial growth. Hydroalcoholics extracts were tested by the diffusion method using blood agar, through wells technique. There was no formation of halos of inhibition of the bacterral growth for Citrus limon L. and Sicana odorifera hydroalcoholics extracts. However, it was verified antibacterial activity for Eugenia uniflora L., which showed a MIC of 6,25mg/mL. The Persea americana L. extract had a CIM of 25mg/mL. Among the natural products evaluated only Eugenia uniflora L and Persea americana L showed antibacterial action against Lactobacillus casei.]]></p></abstract>

<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Key words:</b>    Medicinal plants, Oral Biofilm, Minimal Inhibition Concentration.</font></p> <hr size="1" noshade>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="3"><b>INTRODU&Ccedil;&Atilde;O</b></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Os estudos de produtos    naturais t&ecirc;m adquirido relev&acirc;ncia significativa quando s&atilde;o    pautados os benef&iacute;cios trazidos &agrave; popula&ccedil;&atilde;o e a    facilidade de acesso a v&aacute;rias esp&eacute;cies de plantas medicinais com    atividade terap&ecirc;utica. Os produtos naturais, ent&atilde;o, entram nesse    processo como um componente da biodiversidade de import&acirc;ncia econ&ocirc;mica    e para a sa&uacute;de<sup>1,2</sup>. Al&eacute;m da a&ccedil;&atilde;o terap&ecirc;utica    comprovada de muitas esp&eacute;cies, estas representam parte integrante da    cultura de um povo, sendo um saber utilizado e difundido pelas popula&ccedil;&otilde;es    ao longo do tempo<sup>3,4</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Um dos principais    fatores que vem engrandecendo as pesquisas e potencializando a busca de plantas    medicinais com uso terap&ecirc;utico na odontologia &eacute; a constata&ccedil;&atilde;o    da atividade antimicrobiana de muitos desses vegetais, tendo em vista que as    principais doen&ccedil;as da cavidade oral, c&aacute;rie dent&aacute;ria e doen&ccedil;as    periodontais, apresentam natureza infecciosa<sup>5</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">A avalia&ccedil;&atilde;o    da atividade antibacteriana de diferentes extratos de plantas frente a microrganismos    formadores do biofilme dent&aacute;rio vem sendo amplamente estudada, devido,    principalmente, ao fato de essas bact&eacute;rias serem de grande import&acirc;ncia    nos processos iniciais e de desenvolvimento da c&aacute;rie dent&aacute;ria    e gengivite<sup>4</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">A c&aacute;rie    dent&aacute;ria tem rela&ccedil;&atilde;o direta, entre outros fatores, com    a microbiota presente na estrutura dent&aacute;ria<sup>6-10</sup>. Dentre as    esp&eacute;cies de bact&eacute;rias atuantes nesse processo, uma se mostra bastante    importante devido ao fato de estar relacionada com o comprometimento da les&atilde;o,    sendo bastante presente em uma etapa j&aacute; de cavita&ccedil;&atilde;o da    les&atilde;o, <i>Lactobacillus casei<sup>11</sup>.</i></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Diante do exposto,    o presente estudo tem como prop&oacute;sito avaliar <i>in vitro</i> a atividade    antibacteriana de extratos hidroalco&oacute;licos obtidos a partir das folhas    da <i>Eugenia uniflora</i> L. (Pitangueira), da casca do caule da <i>Persea    americana</i> Mill. (Abacateiro), e das cascas dos frutos do <i>Citrus limon</i>    L. (Limoeiro) e <i>Sicana odor&iacute;fera</i> L. (Cru&aacute;) frente a <i>Lactobacillus    casei.</i></font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="3"><b>MATERIAL E M&Eacute;TODOS</b></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><i>Sele&ccedil;&atilde;o    da cepa e prepara&ccedil;&atilde;o do inoculo</i></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Foi utilizada a    linhagem de <i>Lactobacillus casei</i> (ATCC 7469) cedida pela Funda&ccedil;&atilde;o    Carlos Chagas.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Suspens&otilde;es    da cepa teste foram preparadas em BHI caldo (Brain Heart Infusion Broth, DIFCO<sup>&reg;</sup>,    S&atilde;o Paulo, Brasil) e padronizadas de acordo com o tubo 0,5 da escala    McFarland, correspondendo &agrave; concentra&ccedil;&atilde;o de aproximadamente    10<sup>8</sup> Unidades Formadoras de Col&ocirc;nia -(UFC.mL<sup>1</sup>).</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><i>Preparo dos    extratos</i></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Os extratos hidroalco&oacute;licos    foram preparados a partir das folhas da pitangueira <i>(Eugenia uniflora</i>    L.; fam&iacute;lia Myrtaceae), da casca do caule do abacateiro <i>(Persea americana</i>    Mill.; fam&iacute;lia Lauraceae), e das cascas dos frutos do lim&atilde;o <i>(Citrus    limon</i> L.; fam&iacute;lia Rutaceae) e do cru&aacute; <i>(Sicana odor&iacute;fera;</i>    fam&iacute;lia Cucurbitaceae), fornecidas pelo Laborat&oacute;rio de Qu&iacute;mica    de Produtos Naturais da Universidade Federal da Para&iacute;ba. Cada extrato    foi dilu&iacute;do em &aacute;gua destilada est&eacute;ril, gerando concentra&ccedil;&otilde;es    que variaram de 50 mg.mL<sup>-1</sup> (tubo 1) at&eacute; 0,78 mg.mL<sup>-1</sup>    (tubo 7), ficando distribu&iacute;dos em sete tubos para cada subst&acirc;ncia.    Realizou-se tamb&eacute;m a dilui&ccedil;&atilde;o da clorexidina (0,12 %),    utilizada como controle positivo.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><i>Determina&ccedil;&atilde;o    da Concentra&ccedil;&atilde;o Inibit&oacute;ria M&iacute;nima (CIM)</i></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">A partir do in&oacute;culo    obtido em solu&ccedil;&atilde;o salina, foi feita a semeadura das placas de    Petri contendo &aacute;gar sangue (Agar Mueller Hinton, Lansing, Acumedia, acrescido    de 5% de sangue) com o aux&iacute;lio de <i>swab,</i> de modo que toda a extens&atilde;o    da placa fosse semeada.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Em cada placa semeada    foram confeccionados sete po&ccedil;os de 6 mm de di&acirc;metro para inser&ccedil;&atilde;o    de 50 </font><font size="2">&#956;</font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">L    das dilui&ccedil;&otilde;es dos produtos avaliados, realizando-se todo o procedimento    em duplicata.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Ap&oacute;s essa    etapa, as placas foram incubadas a 37&deg;C por 24 horas em microaerofilia para    posterior mensura&ccedil;&atilde;o dos halos de inibi&ccedil;&atilde;o em mil&iacute;metros    (mm) e determina&ccedil;&atilde;o da Concentra&ccedil;&atilde;o Inibit&oacute;ria    M&iacute;nima (CIM), sendo esta entendida como a menor concentra&ccedil;&atilde;o    do extrato capaz de inibir o desenvolvimento bacteriano.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="3"><b>RESULTADOS</b></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">N&atilde;o houve    forma&ccedil;&atilde;o de halos de inibi&ccedil;&atilde;o de crescimento bacteriano    para o extrato hidroalco&oacute;lico do <i>Citrus limon</i> L. e <i>Sicana odor&iacute;fera</i>    L. Por&eacute;m, observou-se atividade antibacteriana para <i>Eugenia uniflora</i>    L. at&eacute; a concentra&ccedil;&atilde;o de 6,25 mg.mL<sup>-1</sup> , e para    o extrato da <i>Persea americana</i> Mill. at&eacute; 25 mg.mL<sup>-1</sup>.    As CIMs e medida dos halos de inibi&ccedil;&atilde;o est&atilde;o expostos no    <a href="#q1">Quadro 1</a>.</font></p>     <p><a name="q1"></a></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p align="center"><img src="/img/revistas/ijd/v9n2/04q01.jpg"></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="3"><b>DISCUSS&Atilde;O</b></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">O Brasil possui    grande potencial para o desenvolvimento de produtos naturais aplicados inclusive    &agrave; odontologia, j&aacute; que apresenta a maior diversidade vegetal do    mundo, ampla sociodiversidade, com o uso de plantas medicinais vinculado ao    conhecimento tradicional e tecnologia para validar cientificamente este conhecimento<sup>12</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">A atividade terap&ecirc;utica    dos produtos naturais avaliados neste estudo tem sido descrita na literatura    cient&iacute;fica<sup>13-18</sup>. Por&eacute;m, poucos estudos abordam a utiliza&ccedil;&atilde;o    desses produtos para inibi&ccedil;&atilde;o de crescimento de bact&eacute;rias    envolvidas com o processo de c&aacute;rie, inclusive sobre o <i>L. casei.</i></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Nesse sentido,    a escolha pela utiliza&ccedil;&atilde;o desse microrganismo ocorreu em fun&ccedil;&atilde;o    de sua ampla participa&ccedil;&atilde;o em processos de progress&atilde;o da    doen&ccedil;a, j&aacute; que apresenta destacado potencial para produ&ccedil;&atilde;o    de &aacute;cidos org&acirc;nicos,&nbsp; respons&aacute;veis&nbsp; pela desmineraliza&ccedil;&atilde;o    dos tecidos dent&aacute;rios<sup>7,9,11</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Em estudo realizado    por Holetz et al.<sup>19</sup> (2002), foi analisada a atividade antimicrobiana    de 13 extratos de plantas sobre algumas esp&eacute;cies de bact&eacute;rias    e fungos, entre eles o <i>Staphylococcus aureus,</i> a <i>Escherichia coli</i>    e a <i>Candida albicans.</i> Tais microrganismos apresentaram-se sens&iacute;veis    ao extrato das folhas da <i>Eugenia uniflora.</i> Dessa forma, verificou-se    que a <i>Eugenia uniflora</i> possui atividade antimicrobiana relativamente    ampla, devido ao fato de inibir o crescimento tanto de fungos como de bact&eacute;rias,    sendo esta &uacute;ltima constata&ccedil;&atilde;o tamb&eacute;m verificada    no presente trabalho, atrav&eacute;s da atividade antibacteriana dessa subst&acirc;ncia    sobre o <i>Lactobacillus casei.</i></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">A atividade antimicrobiana    do extrato hidroalco&oacute;lico das folhas do abacateiro foi intensamente verificada    por Reis<sup>20</sup> (2006), quando foi observada que a subst&acirc;ncia testada,    tanto pela t&eacute;cnica dos po&ccedil;os quanto pela t&eacute;cnica dos discos,    foi capaz de provocar inibi&ccedil;&atilde;o no crescimento bacteriano em todas    as 12 esp&eacute;cies de microrganismos testados em diferentes concentra&ccedil;&otilde;es,    se mostrando mais eficiente frente &agrave; <i>Candida krusei.</i></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Com o prop&oacute;sito    de se constatar a&ccedil;&atilde;o terapeuttca de outras partes do Abacateiro,    procurou-se verificar se o extrato obtido a partir da casca do caule tamb&eacute;m    poderia ser capaz de inibir o crescimento bacteriano do <i>L. casei,</i> e tal    fato p&ocirc;de ser observado dentre os resultados apresentados.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">No que concerne    &agrave; aus&ecirc;ncia de a&ccedil;&atilde;o antibacteriana da <i>Sicana odorifera,</i>    estudos podem ser realizados no intuito testar essa planta contra outras esp&eacute;cies    de bact&eacute;rias, podendo tamb&eacute;m ser utilizados &oacute;leos essenciais,    compostos isolados, outras partes da planta (folha, raiz, fruto), analisando    se, de alguma forma, poder&aacute; haver algum efeito sobre o crescimento bacteriano.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">J&aacute; em rela&ccedil;&atilde;o    ao extrato da casca do lim&atilde;o, este n&atilde;o foi capaz de inibir o crescimento    bacteriano, por&eacute;m em pesquisa realizada por Lima et al.<sup>21</sup>    (2006) foi observado que o &oacute;leo essencial dessa planta apresentou efeito    positivo diante de quase metade das cepas de <i>Candida</i> analisadas.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">&Eacute; importante    entender as limita&ccedil;&otilde;es do teste de difus&atilde;o em meio de cultura    s&oacute;lido<sup>22</sup>, m&eacute;todo utilizado neste estudo, j&aacute;    que as propriedades qu&iacute;micas dos produtos naturais avaliados podem facilitar    ou dificultar sua penetra&ccedil;&atilde;o no meio de cultura e, consequentemente,    seu contato com o microrganismo, necess&aacute;rio para sua a&ccedil;&atilde;o<sup>23</sup>.    &Eacute; imprescind&iacute;vel considerar a realiza&ccedil;&atilde;o de outros    ensaios para determina&ccedil;&atilde;o da atividade antibacteriana dos produtos    avaliados.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Por&eacute;m, a    escolha por esse m&eacute;todo de avalia&ccedil;&atilde;o da atividade antimicrobiana    ocorreu em fun&ccedil;&atilde;o do fato de que o mesmo se constitui como <i>screening</i>    na descoberta da atividade farmacol&oacute;gica de novos agentes, contribuindo    substancialmente no desenvolvimento do campo da sa&uacute;de, na medida em que    s&atilde;o conhecidas subst&acirc;ncias mais eficazes e menos t&oacute;xicas    na corrida contra a resist&ecirc;ncia e o surgimento de microrganismos patog&ecirc;nicos<sup>24,25</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Nesse sentido,    este estudo contribui para a descoberta e desenvolvimento de agentes qu&iacute;micos    de origem natural com atividade farmacol&oacute;gica, que podem ser utilizados    na preven&ccedil;&atilde;o e controle da c&aacute;rie dent&aacute;ria, doen&ccedil;a    infecciosa e de alta preval&ecirc;ncia em todo o mundo.</font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     ]]></body>
