Abstract

PEDROSA, Nayne Lara Marques et al. Effect of different disinfection techniques on the accuracy of alginate impressions evaluated on stone casts. RFO UPF [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.3, pp.285-289. ISSN 1413-4012.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of different disinfecting techniques of alginate impressions (immersion and pulverized) on the accuracy of stone casts. Methods: From a truncated-cone-shaped master troquel and PVC trays, alginate impressions (Jeltrate Dustless) were produced and divided into five groups (n = 7) according to the disinfecting mode (Control - without disinfection; HipPul - pulverized with sodium hypochlorite; HipIm - immersion in sodium hypochlorite; CloPul - chlorhexidine pulverized; CloIm - imersion in chlorhexidine). After disinfection, the molds were filled in type III dental stone (Herodent) according to the manufacture's recommendation and then measured using a digital caliper. The results were submitted to statistical analysis (Anova and Tukey or Krsukal-Wallis and Dunn). Results: All groups showed some degree of distortion, even if not significant. However, the method of immersion in 1% sodium hypochlorite showed significantly higher dimensional alteration when compared to Control. Conclusion: Immersion in 1% sodium hypochlorite was the less suitable method for disinfection of alginate impressions.
