Abstract
GARCIA, Nayara A'vila et al. Intracanal and systemic medications used by dentists at family healthcare units for urgency treatment of acute periapical abscess. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2014, vol.50, n.1, pp. 13-19. ISSN 1516-0939.
Aim: To verify the systemic medications (SM) and intracanal medications (ICM) used by dentists in the urgency treatment of acute periapical abscess (APA) performed at Family Healthcare Units (FHUs) in the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. Materials and Methods: A total of 130 dentists took part in the study by answering a questionnaire related to SM and ICM for the urgency treatment of APA in its three stages of evolution: initial, in development, and developed. The collected data were registered as databases of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program for Windows®, version 15.0, and analyzed by means of descriptive statistics. Result: Camphorated paramonochlorophenol (PMCC) proved to be the most commonly used ICM, regardless of the APA phase, followed by tricresol-formalin, calcium hydroxide, formocresol, sodium hypochlorite, and Otosporin®. The developed phase showed that the majority of the professionals (34.62%) tend not to use ICM, leaving the tooth open for drainage. The most widely used SM, regardless of the APA phase, was antibiotics, followed by anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs. Dipirona, ibuprofen, and amoxicillin were the first-choice analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic medications, respectively. Conclusion: PMCC was the most commonly used ICM, while antibiotic medication was the most widely used SM, regardless of the APA phase.
