Abstract
MENOLI, Ana Paula Vicente; IMPARATO, José Carlos and LAZZARIN, Helen Cristina. Caries increment in 12-47-month-old children: a longitudinal study. Odontol. Clín.-Cient. (Online) [online]. 2012, vol.11, n.3, pp. 233-237. ISSN 1677-3888.
A prospective group study was conducted with the purpose of determining the incidence of dental caries in a sampling of 103 children, aged between 12 to 47 months old. The study subjects lived in Cascavel/PR and had received aid from the Pastoral da Criança Program. Initially, there was a clinical oral exam which was repeated 1 year later. Socioeconomic, demographic and behavioral data were collected through interviews with mothers conducted at the time of the initial exams. The sample was composed by children who belonged to low income families and whose parents had little schooling. The said children were consumers of municipally-fluoridated water and fluoride dentifrice, and they had never been to the dentist. Their caries prevalence was 29,1% on their first examination, and 40,7% one year later. Their caries increment between first and second examination corresponded to 12%. There was a statistically significant difference between initial and final defs and deft rates, that suggested the absence of curative treatment during the year period. The incidence and prevalence of dental caries were significatives and the occurrence of lesions were extremely polarized because few children answered for lesions increment.
