The cleft lip and palate are among the most frequent malformations and result from failures in the development or maturation of embryonic processes. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of cleft lip and palate in the population of Maringá and region from 1988 to 2011. It were analyzed 449 medical records of the Association for Support to Cleft Lip and Palate of Maringá, totalizing a final sample composed of 424 individuals. It was found a prevalence of 56.6% in male individuals and Caucasians (81.84%), the trans-incisive foramen clefts (44.55%) was the most occurring, followed by post-foramen (27.38%), pre-foramen (23.90%) and subsequently the rare fissures (4.18%). In reference to the beginning of treatment, in approximately 54% of cases search for the service occurred until the end of the first year of life. Family history was present in approximately 11% of cases and the occurrence of malformation or syndrome associated with cleft represented 9.20%. Analyzing socioeconomic characteristics, urban housing (87%) and the middle class (59%) stood out. From this study it was possible to determine the prevalence of orofacial clefts and to characterize the profile of cleft patient. The results are useful for the targeting of actions in prevention, treatment and contribute as basis of information for further studies.
