Abstract

MACHADO, Flávia Christiane de Azevedo  and  FERREIRA, Maria Ângela Fernandes. Infective endocarditis profile in a reference Hospital from 2003 to 2009. Rev. Bras. Odontol. [online]. 2013, vol.70, n.1, pp. 08-11. ISSN 1984-3747.

This study aimed to estimate the frequency of Infective Endocarditis and build the profile of the cases admitted in a reference Hospital for infectious diseases in Rio Grande do Norte from 2003 to 2009. Therefore, data about age, sex, length of stay, outcome of the case and presence / absence of prosthetic heart valve were extracted from the admissions records. These data were described by frequencies and measures of central tendency. After analysis, there was an average of 15.7 cases / year, affecting men (79.1%), with a mean age of 34 years and no users of prosthetic heart valve. The mean length of stay was 30 days and the discharge was the main outcome of the cases. Thus, we can infer that endocarditis, although uncommon, has considerable morbidity.
