Abstract

COSTA, Anadélia Rosa Orlandi et al. Prevalence and factors associated with bruxism in university students: a sectional pilot study. Rev. Bras. Odontol. [online]. 2017, vol.74, n.2, pp. 120-125. ISSN 1984-3747.

Objective: this study aimed to identify the prevalence of bruxism in students from the Federal University of Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys. Etiological factors, the prevalence of dental wear, and the signs/symptoms of temporomandibular disorders were investigated. Material and Methods: fifty-one students (30 men and 21 women) were investigated through a questionnaire and clinical examination. The incisal edge and occlusal surfaces of the teeth were classified as follows: 0, no wear; 1, enamel wear; 2, dentin wear; and 3, extensive dentin wear. This evaluation was carried out by the researchers. Demographic data and factors related to bruxism were collected by the questionnaire. Stress was evaluated by the Inventory of Symptoms of Stress for Adults of Lipp. Students who had dental wear and the habit of tightening/gnashing their teeth were considered as bruxers. Results: bruxism was diagnosed in 9 students (17.6%). In total, 1428 teeth were evaluated. It was observed that 62.5% (255) of the incisors and 83.8% (171) of the canines had enamel wear. Twelve (235%) students were diagnosed to be stressed. There was a statistically significant association between bruxism and muscle pain (p < 0.001). Conclusion: it was concluded that the prevalence of bruxism was 17.6% and that the teeth most affected by dental wear were the canines and incisors. The most frequent dental wear was enamel wear.
