Abstract

MUKAI, Márcio Katsuyoshi et al. Occlusion vertical dimension restoration through partial removable prosthesis. RPG, Rev. pós-grad. [online]. 2010, vol.17, n.3, pp. 167-172. ISSN 0104-5695.

The loss of occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) is the result of an unbalanced occlusion, in which not only the teeth loss may be the responsible factor, but also the parafunctions, such as the bruxism. The maxillary jaw relation restoration is the necessary condition for a proper oral rehabilitation, thus recovering the chewing, phonetics and aesthetics. We report a case of severe OVD loss in a partially edentate patient. After this position has been recovered through temporary prosthesis, definitive removable partial dentures and direct overlays were made of composite resin. Furthermore, the execution of a definitive oral rehabilitation and improvement of symptoms reported by the patients in the beginning of the treatment were observed. The result of this case report proved the effectiveness of removable partial denture as a method for oral rehabilitation in cases of large OVD losses.
