Abstract

MEYER I, AUGUSTO CESAR DE ANDRADE et al. Avaliação da prevalência de ateromas na artéria carótida por radiografias panorâmicas: Evaluation of the prevalence of carotid artery atheromas on panoramic radiographs. RPG, Rev. pós-grad. [online]. 2012, vol.19, n.2, pp. 46-49. ISSN 0104-5695.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the presence of atheromas in panoramic radiographs. The authors assessed panoramic radiographs of 1,500 patients which were chosen according to patient's age in the radiographic exam date; they were divided in five groups by age. It was observed that the radiographies which exhibited atheromas images could be found in all ages. This present study exhibited a prevalence of 1.65% of atheroma in a total of 1,500 radiographies. The higher incidence was in those patients older than 61 years old (11,53%). The prevalence of carotid atheroma increased in older patient, and the possibility of using panoramic radiographs to detect these signals can promote earlier treatments and reduce morbidity and mortality.
