The aim of this study was to compare the conventional ProTaper Convencional System and ProTaper Retreatment in removing filling materials during endodontic retreatment. Thirty lower premolars of single canal were accessed, shaped and filled by lateral condensation technique. The samples were randomly divided into two groups, and removal gutta-percha was performed using ProTaper Retreatment (G1) and ProTaper Convencional System (G2). The amount of filling material remaining was observed in mesio-distal and bucco-lingual directions, and the images were analysed using ImageJ software. The remaining filling material area was calculated on percentage in both directions, and statistically evaluated using Kruskal-Wallis test. No groups showed complete removing filling materials, and no significant difference were found between the groups in both directions. We can conclude that both systems result in similar removing filling materials and both left some filling material inside the root canal.
