This study proposes analyzing scientific evidence of dental research in Brazilian patients with special needs. The inductive approach was used, with descriptive statistical procedures and technical documentation directly. From the platform of the Brazilian Society for Dental Research, supplements the Brazilian Oral Research over the last ten years were accessed to select abstracts that focused on patients with special needs. In the selection of abstracts, descriptors in the Library Virtual Health were used. A total of 399 abstracts were identified and 207 were included in the sample, and 192 excluded, which did not address issues related to the such area. The abstracts were classified according to level of evidence, type of special need, thematic sub-area, year of publication, and its regions in Brazil where the educational institution was bound. Data analysis used was descriptive, using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software. Regarding the level of scientific evidence, 91.2% were classified as observational studies (level 5). The most studied special needs were infectious diseases (18.8%) and systemic diseases or conditions (14%). Among the thematic sub-areas, 44.1% addressed information on prevalence or incidence rate, and 27.1% assessed diagnosis aspects. It was also observed quantitative growth of the submitted papers, and the Southeast macro-region (72.5%) happened more frequently. It was concluded that the level of scientific evidence published in the last ten years in the supplements of the the Brazilian Oral Research is in the average, with high frequency of observational studies, diversity of special needs assessed, growth in publications and superiority of Southeastern Brazil in amount of published papers.
