Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge of orthodontists about the action of the performance of speech therapy in patients with mouth breathing. The research was done in the form of a Quiz directed by 26 dentists specialists in orthodontics, all residing in the city of Passo Fundo - RS. RESULTS: It was noticed and intimate knowledge of the theoretical relationship between speech therapy and orthodontics, since both act directly on the stomatognathic system. The reasons for referrals to speech therapy are related to functional issues, but there is still a lot of resistance in the patients when you see the speech therapist is indicated. In cases of orthodontic relapse, all professionals surveyed reported that the majority of recurrences are due to the lack of accompanying speech. CONCLUSIONS: From the need to balance between form and function, the appropriate referrals become indispensable, as it is known that the treatment of mouth breathing Will be successful sooner intervene because of their deleterious effects during the process of facial growth In the same way that it should be prioritized the multidisciplinary rehabilitation.
