Introduction: dental extraction is a routine procedure in oral surgery. Among the post-operative complications inherent to this procedure is refered the alveolitis. The etiology of this process is not absolutely clear and usually develops pain in a severe intensity between the first and fourth day after surgery. Local conditions are characterized by premature loss or necrosis of the blood clot and unpleasant odor. The literature describes many drugs and techniques used for their treatment. Objective: The aim of this study was to obtain further information about the treatment used for alveolitis by dentists from the central area of Passo Fundo / RS / Brazil. Methods: One hundred and two questionnaires were sent and 54 were returned, which were analyzed descriptively. Results: forty-seven dentists reported treating alveolitis, being the most used form of treatment (46.8%) curettage, with irrigation with solution. Regarding the use of local medication, 41 (87.2%) use it, and the most prevalent was the Alveosan ® (Odonto Comercial Importadora Ltda., Sao Paulo - SP, Brazil) (29.2%). Thirty-three professionals (70.2%) use some kind of systemic medication (analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic, alone or combined). Conclusion: although well known that there are differences of opinions and different forms of treatment for alveolitis in the literature, all forms of therapy used by the dentists who were surveyed are within the reported in the literature, however, not all are acceptable today.
