Abstract

ANTUNES, Luciano Amaral  and  BONA, Álvaro Della. Technologic and didactic innovations for color teaching in dentistry. RFO UPF [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.2, pp. 175-180. ISSN 1413-4012.

Color is a physical property that is subjective and dependent on individual perception. Thus, any person without visual impairment (DV) can be trained to improve the perception of color. Shade matching is an important part for the success of restorative treatments and the overall esthetic result. Shade matching in dentistry has been based on the use of shade guides and, few times, on the use of instrumentation such as spectrophotometers and colorimeters. Yet, as the instruments have showed some improvement, very little has been done to improve teaching of color in dentistry. In addition, some studies have showed that it is possible to improve shade matching through education and training. Objective: to identify students from the Dental School in the University of Passo Fundo (FOUPF) with DV, mainly color- blindness, and training students without DV to improve shade matching. Methods: The visual capability of all individuals were evaluated using the Ishihara and Farnsworth 100 tests (I and F) and teaching shade matching in dentistry using the Toothguide Training Box-(TTB). Results: The I and F tests identified and assisted individuals with DV. Normal vision subjects improved shade matching after using TTB. Conclusion: The methods used in the present study improved the students ability for shade matching.
