Abstract

SANTOS JUNIOR, Valdeci Elias dos; SOUZA, Pollyana Rodrigues de  and  ROSENBLATT, Aronita. An approach to arrest and prevent caries in children: Silver Diamine Fluride. RFO UPF [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.2, pp. 228-233. ISSN 1413-4012.

Objective: To conduct a systematic review on Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), reviewing articles published from 1966 to July 2011. Method: The search strategy involved articles published in the following databases: MEDLINE, PUBMED and LILACS; including papers written in English, Spanish and Portuguese, which reported on the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride to prevent and arrest caries in deciduous and permanent teeth. Literature review: After a critical analysis of the abstracts, twentythree studies were selected among the ones describing the SDF technique and its preventive and cariostatic effect. It was possible to observe that the SDF technique has been more in evidence nowadays than few decades ago, especially in relation to the prevention and arrest of dental caries. There were a few studies that investigated the adverse effects of SDF regarding to pigmentation of caries, while others focused on the inhibitory effect of oral microorganisms in vitro. Conclusion: The majority of the studies reported high clinical success rate for SDF to halt and prevent tooth decay; 38% SDF was effective on preventing 70% of decay, which suggested that SDF may be the material of choice for public health application.
