Abstract

JACOMACCI, Willian Pecin et al. Oral manifestations in patients with anemia: clinical and radiographic study. RFO UPF [online]. 2014, vol.19, n.3, pp. 337-342. ISSN 1413-4012.

Oral manifestations of anemia are among the many signs and symptoms associated to the disease, so the participation of dentists becomes essentially important in the diagnostic procedure and treatment of these patients. Objective, and Materials and Method: through the assessment of patients affected by the disease, this study aims to relate clinical cases of patients at the Blood Center of the University Hospital of the State University of Maringá (Paraná, Brazil) to occasional oral manifestations liable to recognition by clinical and/ or radiographic examination. Results: from the 21 patients analyzed, the most identified changes are: pale mucosa (66.67%), periodontal disease (38.09%), lingual papillary atresia (38.09%), and dental pigmentation (28.57%). Conclusions: patients with sickle cell anemia and β-thalassemia showed extraoral changes as well, whereas patients with anemia caused by vitamin deficiency were the ones who mostly presented lingual papillary atresia (62.5%).
