Abstract

PEDRON, Irineu Gregnanin. Application of botulinum toxin associated with resective gingival surgery in the management of gummy smile. RFO UPF [online]. 2015, vol.20, n.2, pp. 243-247. ISSN 1413-4012.

Objective: The purpose of this article is to report the case of a patient who presented dentogingival discrepancy and gummy smile, and whose treatment associated resective gingival surgery with botulinum toxin. Case report: Caucasian female patient went to the clinic complaining of gummy smile, which caused introspection and shyness, thus limiting her quality of life. Clinically, anatomical discrepancy between the lengths of maxillary anterior teeth was observed, as well as severe gingival exposure, which features the gummy smile. The patient underwent resective gingival surgery, rising dental zenith and, after gingival repair, applying botulinum toxin type A for a uniform dehiscence of the upper lip. Final considerations: The application of botulinum toxin associated with resective gingival surgery may be a more conservative treatment option, even when compared with major surgery interventions (myectomy or Le Fort I osteotomy), for the treatment of gummy smile, aiming at smile optimization and harmony, and increasing the quality of life of patients
