Abstract

BARROSO, Maria Carolina Feio et al. Healthy schools: an integrated experience. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2011, vol.47, suppl.2, pp. 45-49. ISSN 1516-0939.

The school is an important space for the development of knowledge and practices in an attempt to involve various social actors, such as students, educators, and the community. The Healthy Schools Project is an extension project coordinated by the Social and Preventive Dentistry Department of the School of Dentistry of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), which was born out of the need for an integration among teaching, dental practice, and the social reality of local communities. Nowadays, activities of Health Promotion in City Schools from the Pampulha District, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, have been carried out in order to contribute to the education of children and adolescents, so that they can develop the capacity of reflection about their values and social condition and become protagonists of their own lives. This text presents the report of the activities held in the second semester of 2010. Facing the wide range of realities encountered, what could be clearly observed was the importance of realization of projects that contribute to effective learning, with a true meaning in the life of the entire community, respecting its cultural experiences and valuing its aptitudes and aspirations.
