FIGUEIREDO, Priscilla Bittencourt de Almeida; SILVA, Alexandre Roberto Queiroz da; SILVA, Antônio Irlan  and  SILVA, Bruna Queiroz da. Profile of pediatric dentistry services in the urgency and emergency sectors of the dental clinic at Centro Universitário do Pará (CESUPA). Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2013, vol.49, n.2, pp. 88-95. ISSN 1516-0939.

Aim: To evaluate the profile of urgency and emergency dental services for children aged 0-12 years of age attended to in the Urgency and Emergency sector of dentistry course at the Centro Universitário do Pará (CESUPA). Materials and Methods: This research was a retrospective observational and analytical type study, whose data were collected from medical records used in urgent and emergency services at CESUPA from January 2007 to December 2011. This study aimed to trace a profile of pediatric patients, as well as to assess the main causes and treatments. Results: The results showed that most patients were male (50.4%) and aged from 7 to 12 years of age (65.2%). The main reason for seeking dental care was a toothache, which was caused, in most cases, by caries lesions (53.7%), mainly affecting children in the mixed dentition phase. Regarding the treatment performed, tooth extraction (73.4%) was the most common treatment. Conclusion: Caries are the most common confronted problems in the urgency and emergency services of the CESUPA dental clinic. Unfortunately, in most cases, the treatment of choice was tooth extraction, thus indicating a greater need to promote educational and preventive strategies within the studied communities, based primarily on the promotion of oral healthcare.
