Abstract

PEIXOTO, Raniel Fernandes; CARVALHO, Cyntia Helena Pereira de; NONAKA, Cassiano Francisco Weege  and  SILVEIRA, Éricka Janine Dantas da. Oral lymphoepithelial cyst in lateral surface of the tongue: case report. Odontol. Clín.-Cient. (Online) [online]. 2010, vol.9, n.3, pp. 275-277. ISSN 1677-3888.

The oral lymphoepithelial cyst is a rare lesion, which manifests as a pinkish to yellowish, small, asymptomatic, submucosal mass. Most cases occur in regions of the oral cavity presenting lymphoid aggregates, such as the floor of the mouth and the lateral and ventral surfaces of the tongue. Histologically, the lymphoepithelial cysts exhibit a cystic cavity lined by a parakeratinized stratified squamous epithelium. The luminal space is filled with sloughed epithelial cells and the epithelial lining is devoid of rete ridges. Characteristically, the fibrous capsule shows a dense lymphoid tissue, with germinal centers. Conservative surgical excision is the treatment of choice for these lesions, with no reports of recurrence or neoplastic transformation. The aim of this study is to report a case of lymphoepithelial cyst, which was diagnosed in the tongue's lateral surface of a 41-year-old man, and to discuss aspects regarding clinicopathological features and therapeutic management of this lesion.
