Abstract

SOUZA, Eliane Helena Alvim de; OLIVEIRA, Pierre Andrade Pereira de  and  GALVAO, Pauliana Váleria Machado. Dental treatment needs in children of Camaragibe in the age group from 2 to 13 years. Odontol. Clín.-Cient. (Online) [online]. 2012, vol.11, n.3, pp. 215-219. ISSN 1677-3888.

This study aimed to know the rate of caries (DMFT and dmft) and the treatment necessity of students in a center for children and adolescents in Pernambuco. This is an epidemiological observational transversal. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire of interest and dental exam form oral health of the World Health Organization and the collected data were compiled in SPSS 13.0, and determined the frequencies and chi-square test. About the caries experience of the sample, showed that in the sample up to 6 years, only 26.2% was free of caries. For the party over the age of 6 years, this percentage was 23.9%. 38.9% of these children had an acceptable level of caries. Most of the sample had some need for treatment, mainly in the range of restorative treatments. The rates of DMFT and dmft were higher than those regarded as ideal and only a quarter of the population studied for the two age groups (2-6 and 7-13 years) were free from caries. One issue is quite clear that the caries experience (as measured by dmft and DMFT) does not feature in the strict sense of the need for treatment. Due to the destructive character of caries, without preventive policies, health workers and rehabilitating these children, like many others, is doomed female dental and dental problems that could easily be prevented or at least minimized.
