Objective:To evaluate the presence of potentially malignant oral lesions in residents of Aliança and Inajá, inner cities of Pernambuco,BR. Method: The research protocol was submitted and approved by the Ethics and Human Research Committee of the Federal University of Pernambuco( UFPE) and is part of a joint action of the Social Service for Commerce (SESC) and the department of Stomatology from Dentistry School of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). 448 volunteers, over 18 years and residing in the cities evaluated signed a consent form agreeing to participate in the research. They attended an educational lecture about mouth cancer and self examination and then underwent clinical examination. Results: 247 volunteers in the city of Aliança and 201 in Inajá were examined and 26 potentially malignant lesions were diagnosed. Patients were referred to the Stomatology Unit of the UFPE to confirm the diagnosis through biopsy and subsequent treatment .Conclusions: The knowledge and familiarity about these lesions as an essential tool in early diagnosis of mouth cancer in necessary. Is critical to make an epidemiological survey of the current cases of mouth cancer with the objective of planning more specific actions in order to combat , diagnosis and prevent this cancer in all over the state.
