Abstract

LIMA, Everaldo Pinheiro de Andrade et al. Presence of organic foreign body in frontal region: a case report. Rev. cir. traumatol. buco-maxilo-fac. [online]. 2012, vol.12, n.2, pp. 59-64. ISSN 1808-5210.

Organic foreign bodies in the face can represent a diagnostic challenge for the surgeon, due to factors such as the size of the object, the difficulty of access and its anatomical proximity to adjacent vital structures. Such bodies can remain inactive for a long time before presenting a variety of complications. The detection of these foreign bodies is important, owing to the fact that the porous structure and its organic consistency are excellent culture media for microbial agents. They are often difficult to identify and locate, despite the existence of advanced imaging techniques. Conventional radiographs are not indicated in such cases, but computed tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance and ultrasound all afford a good visualization of such bodies. The aim of this paper is to present the case of an organic foreign body located in the frontal region, and also to evaluate the care measures required to prevent complications resulting from the presence of a foreign body.
