Abstract

SEGUNDO, Airton Vieira Leite; SOUZA, Bruno Luiz Menezes de  and  FREIRE, Ana Paula Nogueira Duarte. Extensive dermoid cyst in the submental region: a case report. Rev. cir. traumatol. buco-maxilo-fac. [online]. 2014, vol.14, n.4, pp. 45-50. ISSN 1808-5210.

The dermoid cyst is an uncommon entity in the head and neck region, accounting for only 2% of the total cases when it affects this region. It is an atypical lesion that presents with skin appendages (sebaceous glands, sweat glands and hair follicles) on its walls, mimicking skin. It occurs mainly in young adults, during the second or third decades of life, presenting as a slow-growing and asymptomatic lesion, which can attain a large size and cause major phonetic, respiratory, nutritional or aesthetic disturbances. Treatment consists of the surgical enucleation of the lesion, and recurrence is unusual. This article reports the case of a 24-yearold patient with an extensive dermoid cyst in the submental region and discusses the clinical and imaging findings, as well as the treatment of the lesion.
