Objective: To evaluate through a preliminary study the effectiveness of unsaponifiable soy and avocado (ASU) in patients with arthralgia and osteoarthritis (OA) of the TMJ Patients and Methods: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Statistical analysis was performed in 14 women diagnosed with TMJ arthralgia and (OA) by the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) and divided into two groups: G1, place bo (control); G2, ASU (experimental). The variables were measured by visual analogue scale (VAS) pain and pressure algometer. Mandibular function was examined by measuring mandibular movements and the quality of life for the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). All patients were followed for a period of six months and four months using the medication. Results: The results were favorable to the use of ISA to decrease painful symptoms and improve the quality of life. Also significant was the reduction in the use of rescue medication in the experimental group compared with the control group. Conclusions: Even in the case of a preliminary study, this research provides strong evidence of the effectiveness of the ISA in patients with degenerative diseases and TMJ arthralgia, so further research with larger samples should be performed.
