Abstract

SILVA JUNIOR, Edmilson Zacarias da. Mini-anchors for use in the treatment of recurrent foward dislocation of the condyle: literature review and case report. Rev. cir. traumatol. buco-maxilo-fac. [online]. 2015, vol.15, n.1, pp. 57-58. ISSN 1808-5210.

When the mandibular condyle moves out of the joint cavity, surpassing the neighboring joint surfaces and staying locked in this position until external forces reduce, is characterized dislocation of the temporomandibular joint. The repetitive occurrence, called recurrent dislocation, is usually associated with mandibular hypermobility. In most cases, the dislocation is presented as a single episode, however the recurrent dislocation has its prevalence around 3-7% of the general population. It is a condition that can affect the quality of life of affected patients and deserves special attention in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Initial treatment is always conservative, aiming to avoid unnecessary invasive procedures. However, when this is ineffective, surgical treatment is instituted. Generally, there are two types of surgical treatment for recurrent dislocation of TMJ, one intends to restrict mouth opening and another with purpose to promote free mandible movements (eminectomy), each with its indications, advantages and disadvantages. The use of condylar mini-anchors as therapy for recurrent luxation of TMJ is a valid option, does not alter the articulate anatomy and will be explained by reviewing the literature in addition to a case report where this method has been successfully used.
