Abstract

SANCHEZ, Heriberto Fiuza  and  DRUMOND, Marisa Maia. Urgent care in a dental school of Minas Gerais: patient profile and treatment success rate. RGO, Rev. gaúch. odontol. (Online) [online]. 2011, vol.59, n.1, pp. 79-86. ISSN 1981-8637.

OBJECTIVE: This quantitative study analyzed the profile of emergency care patients from a primary care clinic of the Federal University of Minas Gerais Dental School and investigated treatment success rate. METHODS: The clinical urgency records of one year of the abovementioned clinic were studied in an attempt to determine user profile and compatibility between complaint and procedure performed by the students, and investigated treatment success rates to assess performance. RESULTS: The results showed that most patients were 20-44-year-old females living in the same administrative district that the said institution is located. Most procedures were not conclusive and required more visits. Dental extractions were the most common conclusive procedure. CONCLUSION: Despite the findings, extreme measures are not the first treatment option in this dental facility. Studies using qualitative methods are necessary to understand the situation properly.
