Abstract

ZANATTA, Fabrício Batistin; RICHTER, Eduardo Augusto; PEDROSO, Antonio Roberto de Souza  and  ROSING, Cassiano Kuchenbecher. Clinical usage of antibiotics for teeth extractions. RGO, Rev. gaúch. odontol. (Online) [online]. 2011, vol.59, n.2, pp. 171-177. ISSN 1981-8637.

Objective This study used a closed questionnaire to investigate dentists' practices concerning the use of antibiotics and antiseptics. Methods A questionnaire was answered by 33 of the 48 dentists practicing in the region. The data were analyzed in terms of frequencies and associations were investigated by the Fisher's exact test (p<0.05). Results The results demonstrated that many dentists usually prescribed antibiotics preoperatively (89%) and postoperatively (100%). The reasons that justify this protocol are the presence of systemic diseases, preestablished acute disorders and the need of using open flaps and ostectomy. Chlorhexidine was used prophylactically by 69.0% and 54.5% of the dentists preoperatively and postoperatively, respectively. When these results were compared with the available evidence regarding the use of antibiotics, the majority of the clinical protocols used were not supported by scientific evidence. Conclusion These results reinforce the need of changing the clinical practices of these professionals
