ROMANINI, Marina de Almeida et al. Caries, biofilm build-up and socioeconomic level of women and children cared for under the Family Health Strategy. RGO, Rev. gaúch. odontol. (Online) [online]. 2011, vol.59, n.3, pp. 453-459. ISSN 1981-8637.

ABSTRACT Objectives To analyze the relationship between prevalence of caries, build-up of dental biofilm and socioeconomic level of mothers and children enrolled in the Family Health Strategy in Campo Grande (Mato Grosso do Sul). Methods In this cross sectional study, 80 women and 80 children (n = 160) were examined. They came from families enrolled in the following health care clinics: Jardim Noroeste (North), Jardim Los Angeles (South), Maria Aparecida Pedrossian (East) and Serradinho (West). The DMFT and dmf-t scores were used to analyze prevalence of caries; SOHI was used to detect dental biofilm build-up. The families filled in a questionnaire about their socioeconomic situation. Results Seventy-four per cent of the families live in their own houses and get assistance from the public dental service. Mothers presented DMFT=17.44 and SOHI=1.45. In children aged 12, DMFT was 1.80 and in those aged 6 to 11, dmf-t and DMFT were 2.08 and 0.68, respectively. The overall SOHI in children was 1.35. Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between prevalence of caries, biofilm build-up and the socioeconomic level of the population under study.
